“Mobile banking today is more than just another channel; it has become the remote control for all banking interactions. Mobile devices allow users to speed up ATM withdrawals, set in-branch appointments, turn debit cards on and off, and interact with voice-based artificial intelligence.”

Whew! That pretty much says it all. Javelin’s new 2016 Mobile Banking Financial institution Scorecard: Mobile Becomes the Remote Control for Banking should convince anyone who thinks mobile is today’s “hot new thing” to see more clearly. Whether or not all of your customers have adopted it, mobile […]

Lock Down … Don’t Lock Out

What’s the No. 1 reason financial institutions give for not adopting cloud technology? Security. The thought of migrating to a virtualized business platform can strike terror in the hearts of bank executives. And it’s no wonder. Many solutions can be risky, lacking the top-tier security banks and other high-risk enterprises require. And, not surprising, cybercriminals always attack at an organization’s weakest point.

Most banks shy away from cloud services because of concerns about how their stored data – or that of their customers – is treated. That’s because it’s common for commercial consumer services to […]

Now that the Justice Department has found other means to crack open contents of the iPhone at the center of U.S. Government v. Apple, the pressure is off the company to breach its own security. At least it was. After saying would drop the case, the Justice Department filed a letter April 8 with the U.S. District Court in Northern California, stating it needs Apple to mine data from another iPhone – this time for a drug-trafficking case.

This issue is far from over. We’re likely to see it played out in Congress and the […]

It’s All About the Consumer … Or Is It?

The other day, my friend, Susan, told me about her experience trying to add a personal hotspot to her iPhone. Susan is a small-business owner who frequently works away from her office, and I’d been on her case to steer clear of public Wi-Fi – it is absolutely not safe! Now, Susan is no tech expert; but she’s fairly adept at consumer apps, regularly using mobile devices to book flights, buy books, write research papers and do her banking. Activating a hotspot on her smartphone seemed simple enough.

But what proceeded was a primer […]

A decade ago, when you wanted to show someone pictures of your kids or grandkids, you’d pull a few pictures out of your wallet. Today, we turn on our phones and share the latest video of the baby taking his first steps or the first-grader losing her first tooth.

It also hasn’t been very long since you’d gather up your pile of receipts, W-2s and 1099 statements so you could prepare for tax season. Now, many of those items are sent to you electronically and stored on your computer.

Life is a lot […]

Almost every week, I encounter bank CEOs or IT executives who tell me they don’t have the bandwidth to move to cloud computing. Some think they don’t need it. Others think it’s gimmicky. Most are anxious about data security. For example …

“Yeah, we’ve thought about it, but we have a lot invested in our current systems.”

“Cloud? That’s something we want to look into next year. Right now we’re up to our ears in a core conversion and our employees are maxed out.”

“I worry about how easy it is […]

How do I love thee, Smartphone? Let me count the ways: watching a movie, finding directions, listening to music, getting the score, buying stuff, playing games, videotaping the kids’ soccer game … and doing my banking.

When a phone is your PFI

For today’s Americans, making phone calls with your iPhone or android is almost an afterthought. A November 2015 Pew Research Center study found two-thirds of American adults own a smartphone – nearly double the number from four years ago. And mobile searches officially outpaced desktop searches last year, according to Google. Not only do […]

We’re lucky today. There are so many ways that technology takes the hassle out of daily life. With a few finger taps, we can buy airline tickets, check the weather, settle a bet, pay bills, and control lights and thermostats from anywhere. So, why do we still perform antiquated bank processes that cost everyone time and money? More to the point, how long will our customers put up with it?

Pushing paper costs time and money

Take mortgage lending, for example. For consumers, buying a home is one of the most paper-intensive processes they face. We know […]

In military circles, they talk a lot about being “combat-ready” – words we don’t usually associate with our industry. But it’s time to take this term to heart, equipping our credit unions and training our members to defeat online thieves.

Just this year we’ve seen a billion-dollar, multi-bank cyberheist, three health insurance breaches, major hacks into military and government, and the list goes on. How did they get away with it? Improperly handled data transfer to a non-accredited data center, unencrypted health care data and employees duped into phishing schemes, to name a few. In every […]

Remember the old saw about hindsight being 20/20? Or, as filmmaker Billy Wilder put it, “Hindsight is an exact science.”

Yes, when something goes wrong, we generally know what we should have done … looking back. But people aren’t especially good at predicting the future. That’s why Hong Kong-based Deep Knowledge Ventures elected VITAL – a computer algorithm – to its board of directors last year. “VITAL” helps the company avoid pitfalls mere humans may have missed.

So, here’s my question: Do we need an algorithm to tell us there will be more and bigger cyberattacks on banks and […]
